PERE LAVAL'S DAY

Every September, devotees flock to Sainte Croix to see the shrine of holy missionary Pere Laval. Known as the "Saint of Mauritius", he spent his life fighting against slavery. It's believed his resting place is imbued with miraculous healing powers. Father Laval was a missionary who devoted his life in Mauritius to the abolition of slavery and the dignified treatment of the island's slaves, becoming a symbol of racial harmony and integration. The church, in which his body rests, Sainte Croix, lies just to the north-east of Port Louis town centre and has become the site of this annual pilgrimage, a holy day in the Mauritian calendar, in addition to receiving pilgrims throughout the year.
