Chamarel Coloured Earth – Black River

Close to Black River Gorges National Park, from the village of Case Noyale, a winding road leads to the coloured earths at Chamarel. Over time, the weathering and subsequent erosion of volcanic ash has led to the formation of exposed hills complete with contrasting tiers of different shades of red, yellow, green and blue. From the hillside, an easy walking trail leads to the beautiful Chamarel waterfalls, cascading hundreds of feet down the side of a cliff.

Casela Nature Reserve – Black River

Today Casela is much more than just a nature reserve. Besides the numerous varieties of birds and animals, Casela also offers a unique and rare opportunity to walk with Lions and Cheetahs in their natural habitat, giving you the opportunity to meet, touch and walk with these magnificent big cats! At Casela, you can also bring out your adventurous side by tackling the "Rando Fun" circuit. This includes a basic climb to the top of a mountain, a trek through the natural wilderness and beauty of the Mauritian countryside, a BBQ grill lunch, a swim through a canyon and finish with a flying fox over a valley! There are numerous other activities on offer at Casela, including a quad bike experience through the reserve where you can roam amongst deer, zebras and African antelopes.

La Vanille Reserve des Mascareignes – Savanne

Located in the South, La Vanille Reserve gives you the opportunity to check out the Nile Crocodiles. There are also various species of monkeys, geckos, fruit bats, deer, iguanas, wild boar and tortoises, including Domino, aged 90 years old and one of the world's largest giant tortoises, weighing in at 275kgs!

SSR Botanical Gardens – Pamplemousses

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (the SSR Botanical Garden) is the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere. The garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre in 1770, and covers an area of around 37 hectares.

While the garden is most famous for its giant water lilies, the garden features spices, ebonies and sugar canes, as well as 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and the islands around the Indian Ocean. Many trees have been planted by world leaders and royalty, including Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, Indira Gandhi, Francois Mitterrand and Robert Mugabe.
